Danny Gokey Visits American Idol Season 9

The second elimination show of American Idol season 9 aired Thursday night on FOX. AI season 8's third place finisher Danny Gokey returned to perform his single My Best Days are Ahead of Me, and of course, four contestants - two guys and two girls -- received their walking papers, leaving just 16 hopefuls left to compete for the coveted title of American Idol.

AI's second elimination show kicked off with the top 20 contestants' rendition of the Black Eyed Peas hit I Gotta Feelin'. How it 'felt' was a little too High School Musical, a lot too Glee and way too campy, but that's the way it goes. At least the top 20 had another chance to practice their performance skills.

The first round of week two American Idol elimination action saw Tim Urban saved right off the bat, while Todrick Hall was left standing. Michael Lynche, who excelled on Tuesday night, was told to have a seat on the couch. Casey James was also proclaimed safe, leaving John Park standing with Todrick Hall staring down the barrel of elimination. Ultimately, John got the boot.

The big highlight of John's American Idol season 9 experience was "Shania Twain" and meeting his fellow season 9 cast mates. His Gravity sing off was soulful and heartfelt, and it was heartbreaking to see his family watching from the sidelines. John Park absolutely went out on a high note.

The second elimination of the AI season 9 second results show followed shortly thereafter. Lee Dewyze, Simon's favorite among the guys and one of the season's top prospects, was the first of the bunch Ryan Seacrest proclaimed safe. Aaron Kelly and Alex Lambert quickly followed suit, leaving Andrew Garcia and Jermaine Sellers in danger. Andrew and Jermaine left standing. After the requisite dramatic pause, Jermaine Sellers was eliminated. During his exit interview, Jermaine the church singer stuck to his roots, claiming his firm belief that "in God there is no failure... I leave here happy". He went out with a jazzy version of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On that impressed more than it distressed.

Jake Delhomme Released

Despite giving Jake Delhomme a contract extension last offseason that included $20 million in guaranteed money, the Panthers have released the veteran quarterback.

As first reported by Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, Carolina decided to part ways with their much-maligned QB prior to the start of free agency.

Moore, not coincidentally, was given the highest tender possible this week by the Panthers -- a first- and third-round tender. A restricted free agent, Moore, 25, threw four TDs and two picks in two starts for Carolina in 2009 and seemed prepared to battle Delhomme for the beginning spot in 2010.

Delhomme signed a five-year, $42.5 million extension in 2009, despite committing two turnovers in Carolina's playoff loss to Texas weeks earlier. He threw 18 interceptions this past season -- compared to four touchdowns -- and finally lost his beginning job to Matt Moore.

Delhomme's pending release no doubt means that the Panthers will turn their offense over to Moore.

John Patrick Bedell dead

WASHINGTON (AP)- A gunman coolly drew a weapon from his pocket and opened fire at a security checkpoint in to the Pentagon on Thursday in a point-blank attack that wounded two police officers before the suspect was fatally shot.

The two officers suffered grazing wounds and were being treated in a hospital, said Richard Keevill, chief of Pentagon police. The shooter, identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, of Los angeles, died hours after being admitted to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said. They had no motive for the shooting.

The shooter walked up to the checkpoint at the Pentagon's subway entrance in an apparent attempt to get inside the massively fortified Defense Department headquarters. "He reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting" no over three feet away, Keevill said. "He walked up cold. They had no real emotion on his face." The Pentagon officers returned fire with semiautomatic weapons.

Bedell's death was confirmed early Friday by Beverly Fields, chief of staff of the D.C. medical examiner's office; and Leigh Fields, medical legal investigator for the office. Both said Bedell's body had arrived at the medical examiner's office.

The assault at the threshold of the Pentagon -- the U.S. capital's ground zero on Sept. 11, 2001 -- came two months after a deadly attack on the Army's Fort Hood, Los angeles, post allegedly by a U.S. Army psychiatrist with radical Islamic leanings. In the immediate aftermath Thursday, investigators did not think terrorism was involved but were not ruling that out and did not discuss possible motives.

President Barack Obama was closely following the case with updates from the FBI through his homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said.
